Victoria Spa Lodge - Stratford-upon-Avon
Victoria Spa Lodge - Stratford-upon-Avon
Recommended in the Michelin Guide.
Victoria Spa Loge is a large historic guest house on the Northern boundary of Stratford-upon-Avon. Backing onto a canal, its towpath takes you to delightful villages in one direction and the centre of town in the other.
Acquired by Nicholas and Silvana four years ago, the lodge has been extensively refurbished. To afford our guests greater privacy, the grounds have been re-landscaped.
Re-opened in Spring last year, we have received the accolade of an award from Booking.com for a high Traveller Review rating. Out of ten we scored 9.8.
We are also honoured to be one of three finalists for the West Midlands 2020 Guest House Tourism Awards Prize.

Queen Victoria
History
Recorded as a prominent English house by the eminent architectural author Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, the building was designed as a hotel to support, within its grounds, a newly created spa fed by seven springs Two of them bubble up into our basement.
Augustus Granville, the Victorian authority on all English spas, asserted that these springs had long attracted visitors and maintained they would certainly have been known to William Shakespeare and his wife Anne Hathaway who lived just a mile away.
Just six weeks before her coronation as ruler of the largest empire in the world, the 19 year old Queen Victoria spent the grand opening night of the spa in one of our rooms. Hence our name.
The owners then received rare permission from the palace to exhibit Her Majesty's personal coat of arms . These are positioned between the gables and in the fireplaces on the first floor.
Seventy years later, and now a private house, it was home of the celebrated artist and cartoonist, Bruce Bairnsfather, whose humorous take on life in the Great War won him global admiration. The British police, to this day, retain the affectionate soubriquet, given to it by the public after the artist's main comic character - 'Old Bill.'
Our private reception room was his studio.
Food and Drink
A full Continental breakfast is served with fruit, fresh juice, cereal, yoghurt, toast and jams. Coffee is made by a machine. Serving time is flexible. At our discretion, evening meals can be provided.

Social Activities
A stroll along the towpath takes you to the heart of the town. Here lie medieval streets, delightful shops, elegant tea rooms and enticing restaurants. The jewel is the Royal Shakespeare Company theatre, where brilliant stage productions are performed by world class actors.
Anne Hathaway's Cottage
A two mile walk in the opposite direction down the canal will take you to the farm of Shakespeare’s mother, Mary Arden in Wilmcote.
Should you venture further along the towpath you could perhaps get a lift on a passing barge, whose captain might appreciate your muscular assistance with one or two of the 54 locks between Stratford and Birmingham.
Nearby is the Cotswolds, home to some of the most beautiful countryside in the world. The magnificent Warwick Castle and the spectacular Ragley Hall, seat of The Marquess of Hertford, are less than 30 minutes away. The home of Anne Hathaway, who the Bard wooed and wed is a mile and a half from Victoria Spa and well worth the pilgrimage.
Fun things around Stratford - even with lockdown!
Even with lockdown, there is still much to enjoy locally. Here are a few of our favourites.
Adventure Sports is the best outdoor activity enterprise in the region - just ten miles away. On their extensive menu is archery, karting, quad bikes, clay pigeon shooting, paintball, axe throwing, hovercraft and, for the young ones, treasure hunts. Their friendly team can arrange it all for you, see: Adventure Sports
The View near Henley-in-Arden, where the hospitable owners - Leanne and David Amor - have created a wonderful large restaurant overlooking the Malvern Hills and a marina below. Sheep and cows graze in nearby fields and there is a picturesque walk to the towpath of the Stratford Birmingham canal, see: The View
The Butterfly Farm is home to hundreds of the world's most beautiful butterflies fluttering in an exotic environment featuring tropical blossoms, splashing waterfalls and fish-filled pools. Book beforehand: The Butterfly Farm
Salt, The Woodsman and No 9 Church Street are sensational gourmet restaurants in town we recommend to our guests. All must be booked beforehand:
- Salt
- The Woodsman
- No 9 Church Street
Edstone Aqueduct is the longest cast iron aqueduct in England - 475 feet. It is unusual in that its towpath is at the level of the canal bottom. By boat or feet it is worth the bucket list experience of crossing it. Only four miles from us, door to bridge, see: Edstone Aqueduct

Our five guest bedrooms have en suite bathrooms - all renovated and upgraded. Besides new décor, the lighting has been modernised, new carpets fitted and smart TVs with Netflix installed. The bathrooms have been re-plumbed. The showers are now powered by a newly installed thermostat system to ensure a luxurious flow of water.
Victoria Spa Lodge as a Venue
Our principal reception room is excellent for a small conference or a party as it can take up to forty guests. The new landscaping also allows for a marquee. We have an arrangement with our immediate neighbour for hosting large events like wedding parties.
Covid Considerations
We are fully compliant with Corona hospitality protocols; moreover, we have the flexibility to serve our guests meals at a separate table in a different room if they ask.
New Hospitality Offering - Whole house for let!
One development from the lockdown is that groups and families are seeking to rent large houses such as ours for gatherings. As we are bang in the centre of England, we are the best place to gather for family members dispersed in different regions. To make this feasible, we have separated - through the recreation of an old kitchen - our private quarters from the bedroom and reception areas. Last weekend, the house was rented by a family of three generations including a baby and two dogs. In her TripAdvisor review Lidia W writes she wants to return to us for another family gathering - no higher accolade! Any time, Lidia..
